Aftermarket Toyota 4Runner 1999-2002 Bumper Kits

The Toyota 4Runner is a mid-size SUV first released for sale in 1984. It has evolved over the years and has enjoyed success throughout its lifetime. Of particular note is the fourth generation – models built from 1999 to 2002 – which have been lauded for their timeless design, powerful engine, excellent off-road capabilities, and interior comfort.

Design and Exterior

The fourth generation of the 4Runner was the first to be available with a rear hatch instead of a tailgate, giving it a sleeker, more modern look. The overall design took cues from the 90s-era Toyota Land Cruiser, with its short wheelbase, upright stance, and boxy shape. There was also a new body style available, known as the “Sport”, which came with an upgraded front bumper, side skirts, and a rear spoiler, along with 15-inch alloy wheels and a unique grille.

The interior was comfortable and well laid out, with plenty of cargo space and standard features like air conditioning, a four-speaker audio system, power windows and locks, and adjustable lumbar support. Some models were equipped with leather trim as well.

Engine

The 4Runner was available with two engine choices – a 3.4-liter V6 or a 4.7-liter V8. Both were capable and reliable powerplants, but the V8 was especially impressive, producing a healthy 245 horsepower and 315 lb-ft of torque. This made the 4Runner a real powerhouse off-road, while still remaining fuel efficient.

Off-Road Capability

When equipped with the optional four-wheel drive system, the 4Runner was ready for anything. It had plenty of ground clearance, allowing it to traverse rocky trails with ease, and the V8 engine made it surprisingly nimble. It was also fitted with heavy-duty skid plates, which protected the vital components from harm.

The 4Runner could also be equipped with an optional locking differential, making it even more capable in rough terrain. This allowed the driver to lock the rear axle, preventing the vehicle from sliding when going over slippery surfaces.

Safety

Safety was a major priority for the 4Runner, and for good reason. In addition to airbags, ABS brakes, and traction control, the 4Runner was also fitted with a ‘roll-sensing’ system which detected if the vehicle was about to rollover and alerted the driver through an audible alarm.

Conclusion

The 1999-2002 Toyota 4Runner is one of the most beloved SUVs of all time. It offers a timeless design, powerful engine options, excellent off-road capability, and plenty of interior comfort. It is still considered by many to be one of the best SUVs on the market and its popularity continues to this day.
